Yvonne and I were on a casual drive to Hana the other day when we noticed fliers attached to all the telephone poles. We stopped and jotted down the following link from the flier...

The message on this site is not extremely plausible, but is bone chilling none the less. This definition of a new world order has an interesting concept of wealth management...666. It also has a view of Israel that parallels something you would expect from Nazi propaganda.

Believers in Christ need to be aware of this kind of propaganda as we are watchful in observing the signs of the times. God's plan is on schedule and we can be ready as we rest confidently in the palm of His hand.

Snow and grand kids

We were blessed to be in Yakima for Christmas and even more blessed to have a little snow. As you can see, dads and grandpas enjoy the snow when the little ones are having a good time. I think they call this "quality time.". :)

Julie produced and directed a Sherlock Holmes play with the drama team from Oakland High School. Did I also mention that she was the stage crew, the lighting crew and the costume and makup crew? :)

This was the leading character...

The performance was humerous, spontaneous at times, well cast, well acted, and well produced. We were very proud of Julie for this performance....and so were the other teacher, administrators, and members of the local playhouse. Nice work, Julie. The kids will have lasting memories of this.

Pressing on in southern Oregon

While Julie looks pretty relaxed in this picture, it is hard to imagine how she can be.

Julie has just a few week left in her first teaching year in the Oakland (Oregon) school district. She not only teaches music to K thru 12, she does HS drama and coaches track. For the Sherlock Holmes play coming up, she is the teacher, director, and the stage crew! The whole town of Oakland loves Julie, but pray for her stamina. Did I mention she is also involved in her church?

Jamie is 28!

Jamie enjoyed her 28th birthday with her family in Eugene. Pictured here is Daniel, but the rest of us are lurking nearby. You notice that the card Jamie is reading displays a picture of her when she was Daniel's age.

The Shermans!

We walked into Julie's concert in Oakland, OR, we looked around, and there was the Steve and Rhonda Sherman! Steve worked with Mike Reid at Boones Ferry Community Church and they took off in the early 90s for destinations unknown. The Shermans ended up in the Roseberg area, they have a church in Sutherlin (where Julie lives), and their kids go to school in Oakland (where Julie teaches). Small world.

Cookies with Naomi and Devon

Yvonne and I had a wonderful afternoon with a couple of the Weathersby children. As you can see, Naomi is wielding a rolling pin and is cranking away at sugar cookies. We learned that Naomi likes cookie dough as much as she likes cookies!

Devon got into Christmas cookies as well. He is quite an artist with green sprinkles, red sprinkles and other sugar saturated adornments.

Besides cookies, we enjoyed a Christmas concert, the play area at McDonalds, and a drive around Sherwood and Tualatin looking at Christmas lights. Now it really feels like the Christmas season!

One Year Old!

We are so excited to see our youngest grandson turn one year old (on November 9). Little John John, as we call him, is not really that little. Scope out those hands in this picture. He may not only play football when he gets bigger, he may play the whole offensive line!

John John is such a joy to his grandparents (Yvonne and I). He is being raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and while his little sinful nature comes through now and then, he is a happy little guy that feels the love of God from all those around him. We pray that he comes to know God himself at a very early age.

Los Tres Amigos

This it the "band of men" from the Harvest party skit about Naaman and his leprosy. What does a "band of men" have to do this skit? Probably not much. Especially since they have kind of a Mexican flair. Anyway, the skit was fun, the kids had a good time, and the gospel message was presented. And....the three amigos (Tannero, Juan, and Matte) had fun. Still not sure why Tannero is wearing a lamp shade. Hmmm.

Friday Morning Men's Group

For all the guys that attend the Friday morning Bible study at the coffee shop in Sherwood, be assured that we plan to keep meeting even though there are not "formal" men's groups at Athey. We will continue to gather at about 6AM and the Bible study will get started at around 6:15. We are digging into Revelation 4 this Friday.

Dahlias galore

We have a new tradition in September. The Dahlia Festival in Canby is a lot of fun and it is truly amazing to see so many Dahlias in one place. Julie calls these happy flowers.

Holstein just woke up from her nap long enough to say HI. She will be returning to her nap shortly, because that is what she does. Holstein is getting to be quite an old cat...about 16 years old. I have to be nice to this cat because the girls say that they are going to treat me in my old age in a like manner that I treat the cat now. While I have been very nice to this cranky old cat, I'm still worried that the girls will put me in a fleece bed and shove me into the garage at night! Sigh.

Yvonne and Jodie's Birthday Candles

If this looks like a lot of candles...you are right. We (Mike and I) thought it would be fun to load up a cake with candles. So, we found all the candles we could (about 84) and placed them on the cake. We realized that this might not be a good idea when the hair on the back of our hands started to singe as we lit the candles. Even before we finished lighting all the candles, we felt the enormous heat emanating from the top of the cake.

We hurried the cake into the dining room for the ceremonial blowing out of the candles. Little did we know that we would set off every smoke alarm in the house.

The last picture shows the devastation that happened to the top of the cake. Even though we re-frosted the cake, there was a waxy flavor with each bite.

Snow in Tualatin!

We haven't seen snow in December like this for years. In fact, we haven't seen snow like this in Tualatin since January of 2004. In January, 2004, we were coming back from spending New Years Eve in Corvallis with Mike and Jamie when the snow hit. This time, Mike and Jamie are traveling across the country in a little Toyota with an infant and a toddler while we are enjoying the snow. So far, Mike and Jamie have not hit any snow, but they are just getting close to Kansas City. They will probably hit snow by the time they hit Utah, but the forecast is clear sailing until then.

Daniel is getting used to being a big brother. They are definitely in close quarters here. Rumor has it that Daniel now calls John by "John John".

These little guys are hopping in a car on December 19 and traveling across the country to Oregon. I'm sure these little guys will bond on the trip. :)

Cousin Lenny and Maritza

My cousin Lenny and his lovely new wife Maritza visited visited Portland. Lenny and Maritza have spent time on the mission field in Africa and they are currently preparing to head to Spain. We had a wonderful trip to the Rose Garden even though it was cold and rainy. Lenny surprised us by playing my dad's old trumpet. More pictures here.

Dad's Weekend at OSU

Dad's Weekend At OSU
November 14-16

These are the weekends where it is really great to be a dad. Julie has a pack of crazy roommates and it was fun to be with all of them and there dads. Laura even brought her mom and made a family weekend out of it. To top things off, OSU beat Cal and brought them one step closer to the Rose Bowl. Since we were all sitting near the corner of the end zone where the clinching interception was run in for OSU, we naturally take credit for rattling the Cal quarterback and basically winning the game. In this movie, the little dude (commonly known as Daniel) diverted green beans intended for his little mouth into grandpa's mouth. The nano person found this extremely amusing. And we chuckle every time we watch this as well!

Mike, Jamie, Daniel, and John

Some that read this blog may wonder who this "John" is. Jamie is preparing to bring grandson #2 into the world in December. Mike and Jamie have honored both grandfathers with a little namesake. In the mean time, Daniel is about 19 months and is enjoying the spotlight as the only child. Little John will be the first non-first-child in the family. Both Mike and Jamie are also first born.

Daniel's primary activity is enjoying the park. All you have to do is mention the park and Daniel is grabbing his shoes and standing by the door. As you can see from the picture, he has picked up the swing with little difficulty. Mike sees to it that the swing is propelled in the most adventerous way possible, much to the delight of the little dare devil. Daniel is a man of routine and following his time on the swing, he moves to the other play equipment, most notably the slides.

Now you would think that such a man of adventure would not find a place in the kitchen, but one of his favorite activities is to help mom and grandma in the kitchen as they stir and blend a variety of dinner ingredients. The current theory is that men have Pre-Meal Syndrome (PMS) three times a day. Daniel wants to be prepared to step into the gap in the event that food does not arrive at the appointed time.

One of Daniel's most clearly articulated words is "coffee." Mike will pull out the espresso machine and within seconds Daniel is seated on the counter next to Mike handling the difficult chore of helping dad push the button on the grinder. I really think that if worse came to worse, Daniel could find a way to make coffee himself! :)

One of the days...I believe it was Tuesday...Yvonne and I hopped in the car and headed to PA in search of fall leaves. The leaves are either a little disappointing this year or it is a little early in this neck of the woods. However, we had a beautiful drive and we ended up in Lancaster county. It was fun to see the harvest of the corn silage in full swing. They were also bringing in some of the fall hay. As you can see in the picture, the Amish use horse drawn combines to bail the hay. It is interesting to note in this picture that there is a motorized bailer on this horse drawn combine.

Yesterday, we took Daniel to the lake. There were lots of ducks and geese, but Daniel could not resist his genetic disposition and hormonal urges to throw rocks into the water. Fortunately, there were a lot of rocks on the shore and grandma provided an unlimited rock-fetching service.

Tomorrow, we plan to check out Philadelphia. It is supposed to be raining with thunder storms, but that should just add to the adventure. We are not sure what we will actually do, but we plan to hit a pumpkin patch on the way up and then hit sites like the liberty bell, independence hall, the Betsy Ross house, and....something to do with Benjamin Franklin. Heatwoles in the Northwest

One of Julie's friends (Amanda) was just married. At the wedding, we met a batch of Heatwoles. The gentleman on the left is Vernon Heatwole. The rest of the ladies (expect Yvonne) are his wife and three girls. We actually found Vernon Heatwole in the geneology book, so Yvonne and Vernon are some degree of cousins!

We had a fantastic week at Cannon Beach again this year. We figure that we have been to Cannon Beach every year for the last 18 years except one. In 1993, we took a cross-country trip and had to miss Cannon Beach. However, we make up for this the year that Jamie graduated from High School by spending two weeks in Cannon Beach.

Anyway, I didn't take many pictures this year. After all, how many pictures of Haystack Rock can you take? Jodie and Julie were extatic that no pictures and videos were taken. Instead, I took a few sunset pictures. Perhaps someday, I can use them for the closing slide of a missionary presentation! By the way, Jodie is preparing to go on a mission trip to Africa in just a couple of weeks. I'll help her with the slides when she returns. Check out the blog for the Africa trip here.

It was great to spend quite a bit of time with our friends the Tumas. After every session, we hung out and enjoyed tennis, golf, lunch, and a few ice cream cones together.

Julie in Europe. Julie visited Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, and France. She started out with her college choir in Germany and spent the rest of the time with her friend Marybeth.
